The gifts that these woods give are reflected in the amazing work that you all create. Thank you to all who contribute. We are determined to be involved in the future of these beautiful woods through our Community Ownership project.

This Tender Land - written by John Kendal and inspired by our woods.

Inspired by the woodland, John, a local resident and supporter of West Stormont Woodland Group, both wrote this piece and set it to music. We are enormously grateful for his contribution.

This Tender Land

Into the trees this misty night beyond our human claim,
we feel the depths of Autumn’s treasure; Winter’s Earthly frame;
the Spring light and the Summer sun their warming rays to bear,
when silent life will sing throughout the land – this tender land.

Though gender, race and age try to divide us, to our shame,
and struggle, pain and industry become our lasting aim,
a melody of nature is resounding in the air
and silent life will sing throughout the land – this tender land.

These times of unity, of peace and friendship we can hold
will live forever as the love of harmony unfolds.
High above, in nature’s heart – this time of ours on Earth,
this memory will never end.
Would we lay in the woodland flowers, or in the ospreys high?
Would we desire the falling rain, the dark and cloudy sky?

For life itself will find a way – no matter what we do or say;
life will shine through – life will sing through.

It’s hard to comprehend the depths of nature’s lasting goal
or how each tiny part of life combines to make a whole.
Though seasons come and seasons go, this tender land will thrive
and sing its silent song throughout the land – this tender land.

Yet in our land’s diversity, of earth, wind, air and fire,
I’m happy for these sheltered moments sung by nature’s choir.
Woven through eternal dreams – this time of ours on Earth,
this memory will never end.
Would we deem rest in woodland flowers, or in the ospreys high
to take the time to worry how this tender land would thrive?

For life itself will find a way – no matter what we do or say
life will shine through – life will sing through.
Life will shine through.
