A Potential New Pathway for WSWG
Work behind the scenes is still in top gear though our direction is changing with circumstances which have been moving around us, most of which are presenting exciting prospects. Whilst not losing sight of our aim to bring Taymount Wood and Five Mile Wood into community ownership in the longer term, WSWG has taken on board the suggestion from Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) that a Management Agreement could work well in the interim.
Through all the hard work and support we’ve had to date, we’re delighted to say that the woods have been saved from commercial sale. FLS has recognised that the WSWG Project has raised the value of the woods against FLS performance criteria, thereby enabling them to remove both woods from the FLS “Disposals List” for selling on the open market. This is excellent news, and whilst not yet at community ownership, a genuinely positive outcome from the committed efforts of our project and community over the past 7½ years, for which a big thank you to everyone.
The pathway forward now presents the possibility of a Management Agreement between FLS and WSWG that allows the community to influence operational and project activities in line with our Vision for both woods.
These are exciting times and we appreciate your patience and support to date and will keep our membership and wider community informed and consulted on this new pathway. As we move forward, we will need continued backing and input from our community to make this happen. If you would like to play a greater part in this new stage of our project, please contact us at contact@weststormontwoodlandgroup.scot so we can arrange to meet up for a chat. There are so many ways you can be involved so we’d love to hear from you soon.
WSWG Outreach and Connectivity

Outreach and Connectivity has become a key theme in WSWG’s activities as we increasingly promote prospects for community action for nature and climate at landscape scale in the West Stormont area. In 2025, WSWG was invited to participate in a video project co-ordinated and supported by Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust with funding from Climate Connect Perth and Kinross as part of their aim to showcase communities taking action for climate and nature in the region. Filming took place at a WSWG event in Taymount Wood in November with the Stanley Friday Health Walk Group which is run by Stanley Development Trust. Follow this link to watch our WSWG video.
The video was created by Fergus Reid of Stakeholder Communications Limited and Todd Weller of Well Good Media, who were just great to work with. Videos were also produced for Rewilding Denmarkfield at Luncarty and Dùn Coillich Community Land near Aberfeldy as part of the same initiative.
